“BIRD IN HAND”

“You're a better Hunter than I, Gunga Din.” Ralph Laurens said as he picked up the discarded doll. It was one of those home made kind you'd find in most homes with little girls. Blue hair made of yarn. Dress of some type of fabric. Sewn on facial attributes. All stuffed with cheap fluff bought at the local stores. They should have found people at home, in bed, sleeping soundly. What they discovered was evil.

“Too right, Ralphy boy. Don't you f'get it.” Torg Stettler, a former Australian policeman from Perth, said with cold hearted reality. “I called it, vamps.” He sighed a sharp breath in and out. “Damnit.”

“Whoever killed them wasn't worried about cleaning up. Horrible way to die.” Ralph stared at the tiny holes in the little girl's body. “Like she was drained by a creature with needles for teeth. Think its a new variation?” He lowered the cover back down and stood up. Torg didn't reply of course. He was doing his detailed forensics analysis and collecting samples. The rest of the perimeter team remained outside as they finished inside. Less contamination that way.

The family was the latest victim to fall prey to an as yet unknown group of blood feeders. Humans are a strange lot. Practically the number one food item for ninety percent of the darkness and evil out in the world. Seven billion plus people on the planet and billions more non humans, aliens, creatures magical and ethereal, and ten there were the Dragon, Lycans, Halflings, and intermixed breeds of assorted flavors. Who knew?

“I'm done here.” It wasn't exactly what he said but how he said it. His voice was cracking a bit. His throat felt tight. “It's exactly the same. Dead bodies, little to no blood left. Nothing but these bloody pin holes.” Torg was very somber. It had hit him hard that little children died so horribly. “Just these...damned...” He just snorted his digust and left the room.

“I understand.” Ralph replied. He felt the same about the kids. 'Why the kids?' He thought with yet another exasperating sigh. He turned and headed for the door. As he readied to turn off the light he looked around the room one last time. It was a typical kids room with toys and single child sized bed. A hazy shade of bright pink with red and purple ponies decorating the walls. Ralph admired the hard work to do such details. The glittering rhinestone sparkles twinkled in the light. His sharp eyes spied something small. A tiny piece of something covered one of the rhinestones on the wall near the smashed window. “Torg! Get your Aussie ass up here now! I found a clue!”
